“When they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus.” Matthew 17:8

Look out, here comes another mountaintop experience! In the book of Matthew, we see important events like the Sermon on the Mount and now the transfiguration happening on a mountaintop.

As Christ was transfigured before them, his face shone as the sun, and his garment was as white as the light. Each word shows with awe-inspiring simplicity a picture of God’s presence as we encounter the Divine in this scripture.

Verse 8 makes me wonder how different my own life would be if I “saw no one except Jesus.” If all else disappeared. No movies, no street graffiti, no traffic; only Christ. I suspect that it would undoubtedly create a metamorphosis in my life.

Would I be more forgiving, more loving, more Christlike? Thereby creating an inner transfiguration within myself?

This week is a good time to consider how our encounters with the Eternal have changed us. What have we brought down from the mountaintops of our lives ?
