A Message from Reverend Wendy
Happy Thanksgiving! October’s holiday weekend is a time for families gathered around tables laden with festive dishes. At least, this is what we see in all the advertisements and yes, this is traditionally the way my family viewed the weekend. The pandemic changed all this.
Now, Thanksgiving is a reminder to be thankful for every time we can be together and that we can be flexible. We’ve learned that traditions are lovely but expendable. In my own family, we’ve had Thanksgiving outside in the cool air around the firepit eating hotdogs and salads. We’ve ‘canceled’ Christmas because a member of the family was ill so we got together at a restaurant. This year, Thanksgiving will be postponed until all of us are available.
The way we celebrate doesn’t matter and neither does the day. It matters more that we give thanks for the relationships we have, especially as part of our God-family in our community of faith. Perhaps, the eleventh commandment should read, “You shall live with gratitude, in thanks-living”. Truly we are blessed and as a grateful people, we can’t help but bless others. Happy Thanks-living to each one of you.
