“And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.” Luke 2:10-11

Gaudete Sunday, the Third Sunday of Advent, is a day for rejoicing! We light the pink candle today as pink is the liturgical colour for joy. During all the hustle, bustle and excitement, we pause to remember that our greatest joy of the season comes from the birth of Jesus on Christmas day.

Joy is an emotion of exaltation that comes from a new realization; an event of blessing; a state of blessedness. Surely, the shepherds would have felt that way as they received this astounding message. This would be one to tell the grandkids!

The angel spoke of a physical birth, but there is a spiritual dimension also-the joy that breaks through when we finally grasp that Jesus loves us in spite of our past failings and insecurities. That we are precious in God’s eyes; precious, and waiting with “great joy”!
