“This is the day, which the Lord hath made; let us rejoice and be glad in it”
We can only imagine what was in the psalmist’s imagination, while writing this amazing piece. Perhaps a company of pilgrims or victorious warriors marching toward Zion’s hill, who sing as they advance. We see the worshippers draw near the horns of the altar; they wave palm branches and beat them on the ground shouting, “Hosannah! Hosannah!” Then, the pageantry concludes with a repeat of the main theme, “O give thanks unto the Lord; for he is good: for his mercy endureth forever.” Bringing together all the pomp and ceremony of ritual worship, which was such a large part of the religion of Israel.
Psalm 118 was Martin Luther’s favorite psalm. The German priest, theologian, author, hymnwriter, professor and Augustinian Friar of the 1500’s stated that, “This is my psalm, my chosen psalm. I love all Holy Scripture, which is my consolation and my life. But this psalm is nearest my heart, and I have a familiar right to call it mine. It has saved me from many a pressing danger, from which nor emperor, nor kings, nor sages, nor saints could have saved me. It is my friend; dearer to me than all the honours and power on earth.” Rev.
