Here are some of Rev. Heather’s thoughts on the First Sunday of Lent.

Heather’s Notes

The season of Lent has begun and over the next six weeks we, with Christians across the world will be called to spend time reflecting honestly on our relationship with God. Lent is one time in the Christian year when we are also called to take time to reflect on our relationship with ourselves. As strange as that may sound, we need to wonder and take stock of whether the lives we lead are a true reflection of what we profess in our faith. Do we make choices and through each day that are a grateful response to the love and grace we have received from God. During the Lenten days, as we follow the journey of Jesus to the cross and his death, we are reminded that this was a sacrifice given freely. God’s Son invited his followers, and all of us to widen our understanding of what it means to truly be faithful to God’s calls for a New Kingdom on earth. Jesus helps us believe that such a world of justice and peace and love and compassion is possible; and his death and resurrection proved once and for all that the power of love will always be stronger than the power of hate.
If there was ever a time for us to echo Christ’s life and call, these days we are living in is surely that. We need to take the time to stop, listen to God’s words, and live those words into action, so that we may bring a balance to the division and evil so prevalent today. We will not overcome all that is harming our world, however we can make a difference in our small corner of it.
