Last week, the Gospel lesson from Matthew was filled with blessings. This week, Matthew 5 continues with stronger words from Jesus, teaching on the mount. These verses call upon all of us to be salt and light in Jesus’ name. And we are reminded by Matthew’s words that Jesus loves us enough to not only bless us but to call for us to love him back in such a way that all who experience our ‘saltiness’ and ‘lightness’ will have opened to them a new vision of the world God envisions. A world of caring, a world of justice, a world where all are welcome and no one is left standing outside the circle of love. At first glance this may seem an easy task.  However, Jesus is quick to point out that as salt and light, his followers then and now, must not be content to mouthing a few phrases or talk about the Christ they experience. We are compelled to also live lives that reflect all that He taught, as difficult as this may be sometimes. A difficult task certainly but one that we do not have to fulfill on our own. We have one another, and we have God in Christ, loving and encouraging us as we seek to be faithful to the call.
