This week Rev. Marlene’s message will be based on readings from Psalm 122 .
“I was glad when they said to me,
Let us go to the house of the Lord.” v.1
This is the expectant opening salvo of Psalm 122. Here, the Psalmist is thrilled at being invited to join a group travelling to Jerusalem, to the house of God. Why are they so excited?
The stage is set in Psalm 120, when the author asks for deliverance from a life marred by “lying lips and deceitful tongues.” The world is full of lies. So, where can the sojourner find truth?
There appears to be only one place where we can find true answers to life’s perplexing questions and this pilgrim is eager for church and eager to learn more truth in the house of God. The passage reflects gratitude that the church is there. A place which will bring peace among all humanity; which provides answers to those struggling with life’s brokenness, and hope for a transformed tomorrow.
In verse 2, the Psalmist speaks of their “feet standing within the gates.” We have arrived; we are in the house of the Lord! This statement reminds me of a quote from St. Augustine as he addressed God, he said, “For you have made us for yourself, and our heart is restless, until it rests in you.”
May we find rest in the house of God this Sunday.
