If someone were to ask you to quote familiar phrases from Scripture, I’m willing to bet that there would be several that would spring to your mind without too much thought. One of those phrases might be contained within the Gospel lesson we will be reflecting on this Sunday.

Once Jesus’ fame began to spread he came under increasing scrutiny from those who were unsettled by his words and teaching. His was not a ‘status quo’ kind of message and there was concern that he was causing unrest amongst the ordinary folk. So, not surprisingly leaders of the established religion began to question him, hoping to catch him up challenging in an obvious way the system that had stood for so long. The Gospel of Mark contains one such confrontation, and this has been strategically placed in the Gospel to have taken place only a few days before Jesus’ arrest. The question used to try to trip Jesus up was about the Laws of Judaism of which there were over 700! And Jesus’ response astounded these learned men and has grown to be included in the ‘collection’ of best known Biblical phrases.
