All are welcome to join us for the Church Service on Sunday, August 25 at 10 am. Sunday school will resume on Sunday, September 8, 2024; until then children are invited to remain in the service with their parents. Coffee is served after the church service. We hope to see you on Sunday!
Here are Rev. Marlene’s thoughts about the upcoming sermon.
Marlene’s Rev. Notes:
“I was hungry and you fed me, I was thirsty and you gave me a drink,
I was homeless and you gave me a room, I was shivering and you gave me clothes,
I was sick and you stopped to visit, I was in prison and you came to me.” Matthew 25:35-36
As we wrap up our summer of kindness, I thought that it might be interesting to look at the Saint of kindness and compassion, Saint Veronica. According to tradition, as Jesus was carrying his cross to Calvary, Veronica stepped forward from the crowd and offered him her veil to wipe the sweat and blood from his face. When he handed the veil back to her, his image was miraculously imprinted on the cloth. This cloth is often referred to as the “Veil of Veronica.”
Even though St. Veronica’s story is rooted in legend, not documented history, I find it a fascinating expression of compassion and a symbol of loving service. For this Sunday’s passage, I chose Matthew 25:31-40 as it reflects the compassionate spirit demonstrated by St. Veronica as she comforted Jesus in his time of suffering. It graphically underscores the importance of showing kindness and care to those in need, as if doing so to Christ himself.
