“Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called.”
1 Corinthians 1:26
Here, Paul invites the Corinthians to reflect on their choice to follow the Lord. He then gently reminds them that when they did answer God’s call, they were not terribly high up in the social scheme of things. He is making a vital point. Paul wants them to realize that God can work only through lowliness and humility. Who they are and what they achieve comes from God; that alone is reason to boast.
The concept of the covenant binds this reading together. In 1 Corinthians, we receive what may be the centre of Pauline faith: some require signs and some wisdom, but for us, God’s promise has been realised through the cross.
The power and wisdom of God still pursue us, for God’s kingdom is not yet won. We cannot escape “the hound of heaven” (Thompson). We barricade all the doors of our life, yet Christ will wait outside and keep on knocking. Eventually, we will open the door to the Lord; for the ultimate loneliness is that of a life without God.
