Ash Wednesday: a strange and oddly appropriate day to reopen our church to in-person gatherings. We’ve had quite enough of ashes and death, both close to us and around the world, so rather than a traditional service of repentance and ashes, we’ll do something quite different this Ash Wednesday 2022.
As we gather as a congregation once again, we need to release the heaviness that the pandemic, and its multiple losses, has hung on us. We’ll hear passages of comfort and consolation, sing a couple of hymns which have uplifting hope baked right into their melody lines, and then we’ll lift up our hearts, heavy as they are, to God.
We’ll burn the heaviness and grief of our hearts in a transforming fire, and then take that flame to relight our Christ Candle, symbolizing our reopening. It’s all an acting out of the spiritual opening of space for God to create a light heart and a new spirit within each of us.
So come tomorrow night at 7:00 if you’re comfortable doing so, and let’s begin our journey towards a most meaningful Easter!
