The Joy Sunday of Advent. All are welcome to share in the Joy that we celebrate on this Sunday.
Rev. Marlene’s notes share some of what she will be speaking to on Sunday. We hope that you will join us for the service at 10 am.
Marlene’s Rev. Notes:
“John answered them all, “I baptize you with water. But one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.” Luke 3:16
Having already declared that John’s significance transcends that of political and religious leaders of his age, and that his message is in line with that of Israel’s prophets, Luke now recounts the beginnings of John’s public ministry. While Luke shares the same overall story as Mark and Matthew, he offers some unique features as well. For example, while all three Gospels recall that John preaches repentance and baptizes, Luke alone describes the questions of those looking to repent. John’s answers echo Jesus’ later preaching regarding the believer’s attitude toward possessions; as in: share with whoever is in need and be satisfied with your pay, and also to abandon all unjust actions such as: “collecting no more than the amount prescribed” and “do not extort money from anyone by threats or false accusation.”
John’s message and life style lead many to wonder if John might be the Messiah, a tradition preserved only in Luke and John. Yet, John himself makes the distinction in today’s Gospel, stating that, “one who is more powerful than I is coming,” who will baptize with “the holy Spirit and fire.” In spite of some ominous language (“the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire”), John’s preaching leads to eager anticipation of the “good news” of what God is about to do.
This week’s passage points to the coming of Jesus and the profound transformation He brings. It reflects the promise of something greater—a renewal and purification that leads to new life. Within the Advent theme of Joy, this anticipates the good news of the Messiah, whose arrival fulfills God’s promises and empowers us through the Spirit. It’s a moment of rejoicing, as John’s fiery preaching ultimately points to hope and salvation.
