Join us for Sunday service.  We are happy to have Rev. Heather Koots lead the service this Sunday.  There is NO Sunday School, however, there is coffee after church.  We hope that you can join us.

Here are a few notes from Rev. Heather.

Notes from Rev. Heather Koots

In three great religions, the blessing of ‘Abram’ is significant. In Chapter 12 Abraham follows God’s direction to leave all that is familiar and risk going into an unknown land in an unknown journey which is a foundation for Islam, Judaism and Christianity.  Everything changed for Abram even his name as God bestows on him the promise of blessings for every generation and renames him Abraham.

This story, of which there is more than one version in the Hebrew Bible is filled with meaning far beyond the journey itself. For in fulfilling God’s call, Abraham risked not only being in a strange land; this ‘Biblical hero’ became willing to risk his very identity…all that he believed he would ever be. Abraham, with God’s strength surrounding him, responded to an entirely new way of being.

There are lessons for us all in this reading. Especially as we move into a month that has so much significance for so many.  We are, each of us urged by God to continue growing and becoming our authentic selves, flawed, imperfect and deeply loved by the One who calls us.

The kids of Sherwood Park United will share the results of an exciting project marking the 100th Anniversary of the United Church of Canada.  I have not been part of this at all so I’m looking forward to hearing all about it.

 In peace

Heather Koots
