Here are Rev. Marlene’s notes about the upcoming sermon.

Marlene’s Rev. Notes:

“Now when these things begin to take place, stand up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.” Luke 21:28

This week’s passage begins quite dramatically as Jesus describes cosmic disruptions in the sun, moon, and stars, along with upset on earth, as nations are bewildered by natural chaos. There is a sense of universal upheaval and fear, with people fainting in terror at what’s happening in the world.

Essentially, Jesus addresses “the end” that begins with his return.  Accompanying that return will be great cosmic signs. The imagery often reflects the prophetic language of Hebrew scriptures such as Isaiah and Joel. The disturbances will be so great as to bring great distress and anguish.  One need only picture the trauma that comes at a major catastrophe and multiply it many times to get a feel for what is described here.  When the earth becomes an unstable environment and the heavens give evidence of instability, it will be a frightening time.

It is at such a moment of insecurity, that the Son of Man will appear riding on the clouds.  The return of such a figure in great power and glory will put a stop to the chaos of the end. Jesus’ return – signals his divine intervention in history. Saints present at that time can lift their heads, for their redemption is near.

Jesus continues to warn the disciples to be sure that the day does not take them unaware like a trap, which means avoiding “dissipation, drunkenness, and the anxieties of life.” Their hearts, and our hearts are not weighed down by the cares of this life in light of our eventual redemption. For what Paul calls the “blessed hope” of our redemption by God, is something that encourages us to live wisely before God. Instead of focusing on fear, Christ invites hope and expectancy, as these events signal deliverance, and the nearness of God’s kingdom.
