Here are Rev. Marlene’s thoughts on this week’s passage.
“Jesus said to him, ‘Feed my sheep.'” John 21:17
This week’s lectionary passage in John’s Gospel is a Resurrection encounter between Jesus and his Apostles. Here, the group of fishermen, who had followed Jesus, set out for a night on the water, but they come up empty. Catching nothing by dawn reveals their limitations. They can no longer achieve their basic goals without the Lord. At dawn, Jesus appears and offers a tip about where to find fish. The disciples follow the advice, and their resulting abundant catch makes it plain who the mystery man is: “It is the Lord!” Peter then feels compelled to leap into the sea (there we see allusions to Baptism). Together with the risen Lord on shore, the disciples present their fish, which Jesus mixes with his own meal. The mingling of heavenly and earthly food is clearly Eucharistic imagery and an echo of other Resurrection accounts in which the risen Lord shares a post-Resurrection meal with his disciples.
After the Baptismal and Eucharistic imagery, the scene shifts focus to an exchange between Jesus and Peter, where Peter faces a three-fold interrogation, followed by a commissioning. Three times the risen Jesus questions Peter’s love for him. Each time, Peter affirms his love for the Lord as Jesus calls Peter to care for (feed, tend) the flock that Jesus draws to himself. Ultimately, Jesus confirms that Peter’s love will match his own; Peter will face a death like that of Jesus and it, too, will glorify God. Peter needs only to follow him.

Here at Sherwood Park United we are blessed to have a singing congregation. It is evident each week when our whole church family comes together in worship, music and song.
This Sunday, the choirs and musicians of Sherwood Park United are looking forward to sharing favourite anthems, hymns, handbell, organ and piano selections as we worship together at our Spring Music Service.
We are grateful to Rev. Marlene Salmonson and Claire Spiess for leading us in this celebrative service, where we will also be acknowledging Mother’s Day and Christian Family Sunday.
So, we invite you to join us at 10:00 am on Sunday morning, sing with gusto and abandon, and stay for coffee and conversation downstairs in the Fellowship Hall after the service.

What the world needs now… is love, sweet love…
Good morning, you beautiful people!
I am absolutely thrilled to be joining you for worship on this May long weekend! This Sunday, we will reflect on love. As sweet as love is, the love I’m referring to is not a sentimental, ooey-gooey sort of love; rather, a bold, public, and trans formative love we have been called to live as Christians. In an increasingly divisive world driven by power, hierarchy, and exclusion, Jesus calls his followers to a counter cultural way: self-giving love. If you’d like to read ahead, you’re invited to check out John’s gospel prior to Sunday, John 13: 31-35. You’re invited to wonder about what the Spirit is saying to you, to the Church, and to the world.

Marlene’s Rev. Notes:
“The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is the lamp.” Revelation 21:23
The Bible ends up very much where it began. The broken relationship between God and human beings is healed and once again made whole. The curse of Genesis 3 is lifted. For the first time since Eden, the world as it is finally matches the world as God wants it to be.
John sees Jerusalem restored with walls of jasper and streets of gleaming gold. For someone today – a refugee in a poor country, perhaps – heaven may represent a family reunited or a home stocked with food and fresh drinking water.
Heaven represents the fulfilment of every true longing. As C. S. Lewis said in his sermon The Weight of Glory, all the beauty and joy on planet Earth represent “only the scent of a flower we have found, the echo of a tune we have heard, news from a country we have never yet visited.”
The Bible never belittles human tragedy and disappointment. No book is more painfully honest – but it does add one key word: temporary. For people who feel trapped in pain – whether in a broken home, in economic misery or in fear – for all of us, heaven promises a future time, one far longer and more substantial than the time we spend on this earth. It will be a time of health and wholeness and pleasure and peace. The Bible began with that promise in the book of Genesis. It ends with that same promise in Revelation, giving a guarantee of our future reality. The end will be but a beginning.

An intergenerational theatre company based in Edmonton. This performance group brings together seniors and students to create original, plays based on true stories and issues of aging. Ranging in age from early twenties to nineties, the GeriActors are seniors from Greater Edmonton, and the Friends are students from Concordia University of Edmonton.
GeriActors Theatre is an intergenerational theatre company based in Amiskwacîwâskahikan (Edmonton).
Our mission is to develop performer-created theatre and performance-based activities that are of high quality and that foster positive intergenerational interaction and authentic views of aging.
Adhering to the principles of creative aging, we believe that seniors’ engagement in the arts at a level of comparative mastery leads to significant health benefits, an overall sense of well-being, and a marked increase in social and civic engagement. Our programs seek to challenge stereotypes, promote authentic views on aging, and bring people together to share in meaningful discussions about lived experiences.
