Notes from Rev. Heather

“Let your light shine” said Jesus to his followers. “Do not hide it under a bushel basket”
Light is essential for growth.  For many light is essential for mood regulation. There was a discovery recently of a never-before-seen aquatic species hidden deep beneath the lowest layers of the ocean. It is believed that this fishlike creature has never been exposed to light. We humans however are not a species that can live in constant darkness. We need light. Jesus did not end his teaching by reminding his disciples that light is essential; he continued to call them to share their light wherever they went. This was and still is more than a torch, or fire. The light Jesus is calling out of his followers is an inner light, one that would lead them to bring light to others, even in the midst of dark times.

As we celebrated the longest day of the year, did we make a commitment to share our light with others? Or are we sometimes tempted to cover it with a basket? This is something we can reflect upon as we hear the message Jesus gives in Matthew.
