Notes from Rev. Stuart – for Sunday, Nov. 5, 2023
The readings for this Sunday after All Saints’ Day invite us to recognise the legacy of our ancestors in the faith. That leads us to reflect on the legacy of faith we will leave for those who follow us.
The Revelation to John is the last book of our New Testament. It was probably written down near the end of the first Century AD, during a time of Christian persecution. It is filled with biblical references to encourage the believers to hold on to their faith through difficult times. In today’s passage, the author recounts a vision with glimpses of the “End Times,” or “apocalypse.” The theme of this passage is picked up in the words of the choir’s anthem, “All Things New,” by Elaine Hagenberg.
Our Gospel Lesson is “The Beatitudes,” the first part of “The Sermon on the Mount.” This selection is probably a compilation of teachings of Jesus, rather than a single sermon. They can be seen as the keys to understanding the Jewish law, the Torah. The Jewish audience would remember Deuteronomy 30, when Moses in the wilderness asked the Israelites to choose between blessings and curses.
