 “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16

This well-loved and well-known passage in the book of John becomes particularly personal when its’ focus falls on a member of the Jewish ruling council named Nicodemus. Nicodemus comes to Jesus at night, possibly in order to avoid being seen. He risks his reputation and safety by meeting with Christ, whom his fellow Pharisees have sworn to kill.

But Nicodemus has some burning questions to ask such as: “Who are you Jesus?” and “Have you really come from God?”

The statement that Christ makes in John 3:16, tells the entire story of salvation in a few words; it encapsulates God’s love for the world, God’s gift of his Son and the opportunity for anyone who believes to be saved.

The story of Nicodemus is an interesting one. After meeting Christ, Nicodemus grew bold. When the Sanhedrin discussed Jesus, he spoke out against their willingness to condemn the man without actually hearing him out. For that, Nicodemus was sternly criticized.

After Jesus’ death, Nicodemus became even more public in his support of Christ; to the point that he and Joseph of Arimathea, took Christ’s body from Calvary and prepared it for burial.

As we stretch ourselves a bit over Lent, I wonder, “What questions about Christ do we feel uncomfortable asking?”
