Here are Rev. Marlene’s notes on the Bible passage for this Sunday.
Marlene’s Rev. Notes:
“For the Son of Man came to seek out and to save the lost.” Luke 19:10
This Sunday’s scripture reading comes from the Book of Luke and it is a favorite story of mine. Zacchaeus, who is a shortie like me, climbs a sycamore tree to get above the crowd so that he can see Jesus. Once again, Christ does the unexpected. Instead of despising the chief tax-collector, Jesus sees him and tells him that he will stay at his house. This statement would have been shocking to both the crowd and Zacchaeus!
While Zacchaeus sought Jesus, Jesus sought Zacchaeus. Confronted with the love of Christ, Zacchaeus recognizes who he is and yearns to be different. In seeking Jesus, Zacchaeus finds himself. This story is a wonderful picture of God’s mercy.
In Zacchaeus’s story, we see more than a curious man climbing a tree — we see a soul longing to be seen, known, and restored. When Jesus looks up and calls him by name, grace breaks through the walls of isolation and shame. The crowd saw Zacchaeus as a sinner; Jesus saw him as someone worth saving. It reminds me of the many times that God has shown mercy toward me. What about you? Consider the ways that God has been merciful to you. How do we become alive to the ways that we can show mercy to others?
