All are welcome to join us for service on Sunday, November 17th at 10 am.  Sunday school runs during the church service.  Stay for coffee after the service.

Here are Rev. Marlene’s notes on the upcoming sermon.

Marlene’s Rev. Notes:

“And every priest stands day after day at his service, offering again and again the same sacrifices that can never take away sins.” Hebrews 10:11

This reading from Hebrews repeats what we have already heard concerning Jesus’ priesthood. His priesthood is perfect and permanent, which negates the need for any future sacrifice for the forgiveness of sins. What is new in this passage is the reference to daily offerings. These daily offerings were never intended for taking away sin, however, the sacrifices consisted of lamb and wine.

Thus, the reference to daily offerings taps into the images of lamb and wine to point to Jesus as the perfect sacrifice, the lamb of God who spilled his blood to take away the sins of the world. With Jesus’ resurrection, sins are taken away so that we might enter into a right relationship with God.

God does not want sacrifice and sin-offerings, but rather he wants there to be a change from within the believer that is oriented toward him. Through Jesus’ perfect sacrifice, there is no need to revert to animal sacrifices. Instead, humanity is consecrated and set apart for God with hearts inscribed with the new covenant. The passage then outlines what this consecrated life looks like. It leaves us with a question and a challenge. What does the consecrated life look like and how does my life compare with the description in Hebrews 10?
