Here is Rev. Marlene’s reflection on this week’s bible passage:
“Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” Luke 19:38
This Sunday’s passage, which is a celebration of Palm Sunday (also known as the Procession Gospel) begins with the proclamation of Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem and emphasizes several prophetic connections. In his instructions to two of his disciples, Jesus gives precise details on where to locate the colt he will ride and the words to use to convince its’ owners to let them have it. The disciples go into town, and everything transpires as Jesus said it would.
Another prophetic element includes the way Jesus enters Jerusalem on a colt to the crowd’s joyful acclimations. This description alludes to Zechariah’s prophetic statement in Zechariah 9:9, which predicts the king’s triumphant entrance into Jerusalem. “Lo, your king comes to you; triumphant and victorious is he, humble and riding on a donkey.”
Also, there are those in the Zechariah parable who rejected the king’s rule, so too the Pharisees in the crowd reject Jesus’ kingship. They tell Jesus to silence his disciples who proclaim him as “the king who comes in the name of the Lord.” Jesus claims that their demand would be pointless, for the very stones of Jerusalem would proclaim him king if the people did not. Christ’s statement about the stones reminds us that the truth of God’s kingdom cannot be silenced. Palm Sunday becomes a moment of cosmic significance—as creation itself is on the edge of breaking into praise.
